Plant Shelf DIY

If you are like me, there’s NEVER enough space for the ever growing collection of plant babies. I decided to create a dedicated space for some of my plants that would give them the light they need while also elevating my newly redecorated studio space. This was a simple and quick project that only required basic DIY skills and a few supplies from the hardware store.

I installed my shelves in an awkward section of unused wall space behind a door in my studio. Since the area is fairly narrow, I used a 2×6 board, which gives the shelves a finished depth of about 5½ inches. I cut the shelves to 28 inches wide to fit the space and had Home Depot cut all three shelves from a single 8 ft. board before bringing everything home.

Once the boards were cut, I gave them a quick sanding with 180 grit sandpaper using my orbital sander. After wiping away the dust, I applied Varathane Golden Oak stain for a warm, natural finish.

For the industrial pipe brackets, you’ll need two floor flanges, two pipes that are roughly an inch shorter than your shelf depth, two pipe caps, and two pipe straps per shelf. I used ½-inch black steel pipe for this project and painted them gold.
